The company’s attention to detail – including correct hair and skin colour for players – also ensured that the resulting game was a joy to play.

While it might be argued that subsequent entries in the Pro Evo series are better, the 1996 SNES game everyone remembers is unmistakeable. Crazy dribbles, thunderous goals and hammier-than-Richard-Bacon commentary made this arcade classic one that you could sink night after night into. It might not have the realism of later football games but it was a great way to spend your Saturday afternoons.
