What is spray foam insulation?

Spray insulation is a type of polyurethane foam. It’s created when two liquid chemical components undergo a reaction to create the plastic foam. The foam expands when sprayed, which allows it to fit into the small nooks and crannies of your home that other insulation materials can’t.

There are different types of spray foam, but the majority is closed-cell. Closed-cell insulation has small pockets inside it that make it a good barrier to air movement and sound. However, it is more susceptible to absorbing moisture and vapor, which can require the homeowner to install a vapor barrier after the foam dries.

Closed-cell insulation is also the more expensive option. But since it’s physically stronger, it’s a more effective insulator per board foot. It can also be installed in areas that would be difficult to insulate using fiberglass batts, such as basement rim joists, crawl spaces, overhangs (or cantilevers) and knee walls.

There are DIY kits that allow homeowners to use spray foam insulation on their own. But, because achieving consistent coverage and proper expansion is a challenge for homeowners without professional experience, we recommend hiring a qualified professional to install your spray foam insulation.
